feb has begun, mausam ke tewar dekho, phir palti maar gaya aaj.

badal ghir ayaee hain, dhoop gayab, luka chipee khel rahee hai

tamam kapde jo 2 ghante mein sookh rahe the shayad shaam tak sookh hi jayene.

hum to apne sasurji ke kahe par chalte hain,”beta holi aane tak garm kapde pehne raho”, wisdom of the old, never fails.

kise ne poocha: tum apni beti ka naam kya rakhoge?

jawab aaya : mehgayee, aajkar yahi naam sabse popular hai.

ghar ke bacche pareshan hain,

roz,gobhi,gajar,matar

kya kuch aur nahin hai khane ko

for a change in 2 days aaj methi banegi aur wahi aaloo tamatar.

what choice.

at least itna to mil raha hai, nahin to haal aur bhi kharab hota

vaise hamare ghar ke bacche toh aloo khakar bhi khush rehte hain.

they have no choice afterall

weekends,we try and make changes in the menu

yesterday was chole bhature, last weekend was tikiya etc.,next weekend probably pao bhaji , we try our best as everything is done at home. no outside food.

once in a while maybe McD.

i think its the same story in every house, specially mothers who hv to take this difficult decision: aaj kya banega?

this is the toughest question to answer these days.

my grandmother used to ask us,what dal we would like to eat today and we wud always say arhar, and maa wud say everyday, how can u eat the same dal everyday. and we wud say then don’t ask, make whatever u wish and we will eat that except chana and urad dhuli which tasted yuck. my father made her job easy.every night or early morning,he wud randomly take out quantities of dal, mix them and soak them.it cud be any combination.maa wud crib,it has sabut and dhuli dal all mixed up,how do i cook this. and she wud end up blowing whistles in the cooker endlessly till u cud not make out what dal it was.

maa had come up with different styles of variations to avoid making dal everyday, specially during winters.

mooli chopped up in big peices with peas, and roast some besan, add, water and cook and then later add dahi and lots of green dhania. a change from this wud be addition of “badi” to the same. these things were hot, tasty to eat with rice and also a change from the regular dal everyday.

i still miss maa’s cooking, despite all hassels and cribbing and conditions of not entering the kitchen till she had eaten, she had the love in her heart which she put into the food and till she had fed every last one of us,she wud not eat. when we had grown up and our foodhabits changed as per college timings, she wud still make sure that we were properly fed and not hungry.there were times when no one was at home at she was in the kitchen eating her food and someone wud ring the bell.she wud hv to leave food, wash hands and answer the door.she cud not then go back into the kitchen and eat, because that is how it was.we tried to schedule our leaving house in a way that maa wud at least eat before we left.

i compare women like maa to ourselves, and we stand nowhere.not even an iota of what they were.pure souls, unadultrated love in their hearts, and while cooking vishnusahastranaam on their speech.the food became prasad of the lord. first offering made to god,2nd to the ancestors, third taken out for the cow and then for self and there was always some left for atithi, stranger, beggar, whoever comes to the door.

we are blessed to have seen and lived with grandparents like that, but trying to give the same sanskara to our children seems impossible. we can only teach by example, try and follow what we saw and hope that maybe our children will hv the same compassion in them for humanity and will learn to give and return to the nature and be true to themselves.i don’t wish myself to be great,or for that matter, may son to do excellent in life. i wish and pray that he be honest to himself in life and be a good humanbeing first, the rest is immaterial.be good in what u do,the rest will be taken care by god.
